Victim Of War

By Danni Rose G.

I remember the day,
when that truck drove away,
I had yelled out "Father don't go,
"Why can't you stay?"
He just replied, "Write me some letters,
"although you should know,
"We can't live live forever..."

As that pen hits the paper,
my tears flow along,
and I'd ask the dear Lord,
what had I done wrong,
over oceans and seas,
he's laying on the side,
no matter the pain,
he'll stand up with pride,
his gun's stained red,
and never has he cried,
because the only reason he's there,
is to fight for who's died...

My boyfriend, Mark, went off to war,
my heart had broke before I could see,
he had asked, "Annie, will you marry me?"
I tried not to cry,
as I flew into his arms,
But he'd rather fight for his country,
than work on his farm...

As that pen hits the paper,
my tears flow along,
and I'd ask the dear Lord,
what had I done wrong,
over oceans and seas,
he's laying on the side,
no matter the pain,
he'll stand up with pride,
his gun's stained red,
and never has he cried,
because the only reason he's there,
is to fight for who's died...

I looked at the photo,
of my son in his uniform,
and I knew he was proud,
to be Canadian born,
as I walked to my father's grave,
Mark's arm around me with care,
I cried to myself,
because it's not fair...

As that pen hits the paper,
my tears flow along,
and I'd ask the dear Lord,
what had I done wrong,
over oceans and seas,
he's laying on the side,
no matter the pain,
he'll stand up with pride,
his gun's stained red,
and never has he cried,
because the only reason he's there,
is to fight for who's died...

As his quill hit the letter,
he was blown away so far,
and I cried when I found out,
because I'm a victim of war...
I wrote this a couple of days after Rememberance Day last year. Since Veteran's Day is coming up, I thought I'd post this.
